Flambeaux and Maskers

Comus began the tradition which originally served as a way to light up the route of the night parades. Flambeaux carriers were originally slaves and free men of color, parading, twirling and entertaining parade goers. They earned money from coins tossed by the crowds as they passed by lighting the way for oncoming floats, a custom that continues today. Butane tanks have replaced the old flambeaux torch but the entertaining, rich Carnival tradition of lighting the way remains.
